FARMERS DAY SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED TO WEALTHY FARMERS  –  COOPERATIVE UNION.

Asunafo North cocoa Farmers cooperative Union has appealed to the ministry of agriculture and the government to extend the farmers day awards to peasant Farmers instead of awarding awards to wealthy agricultural Farmers.

Farmers day awards, awarded annually by past and current government to motivate, creating awareness, creation of jobs at agricultural sector for our cherished Farmers boost economic and exchange viability of the agricultural industry in the country.

In an exclusive interview with the Asunafo North cooperative Union Manager, Mr. Patrick Owusu, he expressed his gratitude on just ended celebration of 33rd annual Farmers day celebration under the theme ” farming for food and jobs ” celebrated across the country on Friday.

According to cooperative Union, the motive behind the award is such applauding but it seems most of the awards’ winners are wealthy where most lives a luxury lifestyle whilst most of the hard working Farmers are peasant Farmers with appalling standard of living.

” what we have observed about this year’s Farmers day is that, the celebration was successful across the country specifically Asunafo North and the National celebration held in Kumasi.
But our concern highlighted is that, those in Accra and Kumasi who has never been into agriculture business were believed to be winners of the awards” he noticed.

Mr. Patrick Owusu added that it is pathetic when the awards is manoeuvre to undesirable winners.

He said those who are eligible for the awards are of the rural areas meanwhile some winners according to him has little knowledge about farming.
